How Does Terra Work?

Today, we’re going to explore the Terra Ecosystem map in great detail so that you can brush up on your navigational skills.

Terra has become a premier crypto project since its launch last year. It has developed several new projects and tokens, including Mirror, Anchor, Terraswap, Pylon Protocol, Mars Protocol, and more. All of these services are decentralized and focus on different aspects of the ecosystem such as payments or banking.

The Terra ecosystem map is divided into four categories, which are based on the four types of operations that members of the ecosystem provide. These operations are: core functionality, applications, governance and swaps and exchanges.

The four categories are based on a central node: Terra Chain Operation. This contains LUNA, the native staking token for Terra, and other Stablecoins pegged to various global currencies.

There are two main types of Chain Operation: delegated proof of stake details, and basic transfers and transactions.

Delegated proof of stake validation is what ensures the security of Terra. Delegators are those who stake LUNA to Validators, and in return earn rewards across all native Terra currencies. The daily reward summary represents these earned rewards.

Basic transfers and transactions for Native Tokens are carried out by terra.transfers, while those for other tokens and related transactions are handled by terra.msgs and terra.msg_events respectively.

The three aspects of Terra’s ecosystem are Transaction Fees, Prices, and Historical Balances.

The gas and taxes included in a transaction fee can be found in the Daily Fee Summary. However, if you’re looking for the current Oracle Exchange Rate, which updates every 5 blocks and includes native token prices, you’ll need to check out the Prices tab.

Lastly, we have Historical Balances. This can be separated into two sections- balances for LUNA and other stablecoins, as well as token balances. The three parts of a Terra ecosystem application are Contracts, Messaging, and Events. The app and smart contract development system in Terra, called Wasm, emits two types of message payloads: terra.msgs and terra.msg_events.

Some of the most well-known applications in Terra’s ecosystem are Chai, Mirror, and Anchor. With Chai, users can buy goods and services using KRT. Through Mirror, yield farmers can mint/burn synthetic assets and stake liquidity tokens to Passive Income Streams. Lastly, with Anchor lenders & borrowers(borrow UST) gain interest from their provided bLUNA token collateral.

There are two types of swaps and exchanges: Native Swapping and Terraswap Swapping.

Native Swapping refers to the native swapping of tokens between Stablecoins and LUNA, which can be represented by Daily Swap Volume per token type. Terraswap Swapping allows for liquidity pooling so that any two Terra assets may be exchanged. This is reflected in the number of Liquidity Events or daily UST/LUNA swap volume.

Lastly, we manage the Terra ecosystem through submitting and voting on proposals as well as having a say in how said votes are executed.

In order to submit a proposal, users must deposit 512 LUNA coins into their address. Once the proposals have been submitted, users are then able to vote on them. When delegating LUNA to Validators, this gives the Validators voting power.

The hunt for Do Kwon

Now speaking of stuff that could crash the crypto market – Terra co-founder Do Kwan is reportedly on the run.

This is because Interpol issued a red notice for Do after he was charged by South Korean authorities for violating capital markets rules.

Do is also dealing with legal issues in other jurisdictions, now obviously this is all because of the collapse of Terra’s UST stablecoin back in May.

Terra’s collapse caused around 60 billion dollars of direct losses and tens of billions of additional losses through its effects on crypto hedge fund Three Arrows Capital.

Now what’s interesting about Interpol’s red notice is that Do apparently isn’t on the official red notice list.

Decrypt asked Interpol why that was and it responded by saying that it quote does not comment on specific cases and individuals and that not all red notices are made public.

Interpol not including Do on its red notice list would make sense if Do was some high-profile political figure or businessman but Do is your standard crypto project founder.

Everyone knows who he is, what he looks like and that he’s wanted by authorities around the world.

What’s crazy is that Do took to Twitter to claim that he’s not hiding from authorities, specifically he said quote I am making zero effort to hide, I go on walks and to malls, no way none of crypto Twitter hasn’t run into me in the past couple of weeks.

This wording is admittedly vague as making zero effort to hide could be technically correct even if Do is actually hiding, he’s just not putting in the effort so to speak.

Then again I find it hard to believe Do could continue to use Twitter without getting scooped up by the authorities, surely Twitter works with Interpol.

What’s more is that Do denied claims that he recently tried to withdraw 67 million dollars of BTC from cryptocurrency exchanges OKX and Kucoin though called the reports misinformation and said that no funds related to the entities behind Terra have been frozen.

Terraform Labs later came out to claim that the case against Do Kwon is quote highly politicized, a spokesperson for the company told the Wall Street Journal that the South Korean courts are bowing to the social pressure of UST and Luna holders who saw their crypto holdings go to zero.

This begs the question of what exactly is going on here and the short answer is I don’t know, but it sure is one of those stories that seems to be getting weirder by the week.

FTX chief Sam Bankman-Fried said this is a one time case compensation for a phishing attack and the firm won’t be “making a habit” of it.

In light of the most recent phishing attack, Sam Bankman-Fried, chief of FTX crypto exchange, has offered to help the victims. However, SBF has sternly advised users to take more precaution in the future and this is the last time the exchange will offer compensation.

Over the past few years, there has been a dramatic rise in crypto phishing attacks. This happens when someone sends an email with a malicious attachment. However, these attacks are becoming more and more sophisticated.

Recently, scammers have taken to impersonating the FTX website in order to intercept users’ login credentials and draining their accounts. The SBF team has been working around the clock to prevent this type of phishing, implementing security measures such as 2-factor authentication (2FA). Mr. Sam Bankman-Fried noted:

“We’ve mostly stamped out sites that try to phish users by masquerading as FTX. But we can’t fix fake sites impersonating *other* services. A few users accidentally registered at fake other sites, including 3 Commas.

They provided their FTX api keys to use the sites’ trading tools. Others users were probably phished through other methods. But one way or another, these users were exploited by third party attackers”.

 

The head of FTX said that people using fake versions of the site and entering their login information could be hazardous. This allows those illegitimate websites to access users’ FTX API keys. SBF said that right now, every cryptocurrency company is trying to address this problem on its own. However, he believes that this issue needs to be tackled by the entire industry collectively.

Although FTX has decided to compensate the affected users this time, it is unlikely that they will do so again in the future. SBF said:

We can’t compensate for users getting phished by fake versions of other companies in the space!

THIS IS A ONE-TIME THING AND WE WILL NOT DO THIS GOING FORWARD. THIS IS NOT A PRECEDENT. We will not making a habit of compensating for uses getting phished by fake versions of other companies!

In response to the recent phishing attack, FTX is offering $6 million in compensation to victims. If those who carried out the attack return 95% of what was stolen within 24 hours, FTX will drop any legal action against them.

Crypto wallets protect the information you’ll need to show proof of your money. They safeguard your public and private keys, which are similar to username and passwords in the real world that can authorize transactions in the cryptocurrency world.

So, do you need to buy a separate crypto wallet? No, not always. Even though some investors would rather oversee their own wallets, custodial wallets are an option as well. Is the end of privacy coins so close?

Now other cryptocurrencies that are likely to be volatile in the coming months are privacy coins.

That’s because it looks like major exchanges are slowly starting to delist them due to regulatory pressure with Hobie being the latest exchange to comply.

The people in power aren’t fans of privacy go figure.

Now you might be thinking that this is nothing new given that privacy coins have been delisted by cryptocurrency exchanges in the past for the same reason.

The difference is that all those exchanges were in heavily regulated jurisdictions such as Japan and South Korea.

Huobi’s delisting of Dash, decred pharaoh, monero, verge, zcash and horizon is significant because Huobi was what is commonly referred to as an offshore.

Cryptocurrency exchange Huobi is based in Seychelles which is not nearly as strict as other places to put it lightly.

As such Hobie’s privacy coin de-listing could be a sign of more to come from other offshore exchanges.

The next in line to comply could be Kucoin given that it’s also based in Seychelles.

Note that this is just my speculation but it’s something to be aware of if you’re a fan of financial privacy.

Now luckily for Monero and most other privacy coins Huobi only accounted for a portion of their trading volume though a kucoin delisting would deal a bigger blow it’s one that most of these coins could probably survive.

However a Binance delisting is something that most privacy coins would probably not survive.

While Binance was able to justify listing these coins in the days when it didn’t have a global headquarters it’s going to be increasingly harder to justify going forward.

That’s because Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao has been actively trying to secure numerous exchange licenses and office locations around the world.

There is a strong chance that these global regulators could point to privacy coins as an area of concern.

If this were the case then Binance would be in a bit of a pickle about what to do.

Now I’ll repeat that this is just my speculation but I find it hard to see how the cookie could crumble any other way with central bank digital currencies being rolled out across the world.

Governments want to make sure that their citizens do not have access to any alternatives.

BTC isn’t that big of a threat because every transaction can be easily tracked due to Bitcoin’s transparent blockchain.

This means that regulatory pressure can be easily applied when someone breaks ranks even if the transactions themselves can’t be stopped.

By contrast privacy coins particularly Monero’s XMR are next to impossible to trace.

Yes, this makes them prone to adoption by criminals for all sorts of illicit activity but it also makes privacy coins the only way to protect your financial freedom specifically your ability to purchase things without scrutiny.

Now as I’ve mentioned before financial privacy may not be all that important today but it could be very important tomorrow.

It will be of paramount importance once CDBC’s are rolled out that’s for sure.

What Is a Cryptocurrency Public Ledger?

A public ledger, as its name suggests, is a record-keeping system that has been used for centuries to store data like agricultural commodity prices or news stories. The term ‘public ledger’ refers to the fact that this information was available for anyone to see and verify. With the advent of blockchain technology (which also uses a similar public verification process), the idea of a public ledger became popular in cryptocurrency circles. In this article, we will explore cryptocurrency pubic ledgers – how they operate and some of the challenges they face.

Cryptocurrencies are digital, encrypted currencies that use tokens to facilitate the transfer of value between network participants. A public ledger is used as a record-keeping system that maintains anonymous identities and balances for all participants, as well as a record book of all genuine transactions executed between network participants.

Imagine you have to write a check for $200 to a friend or make an online bank transfer. In both cases, the transaction details will be updated in the bank’s records—meaning that the sender’s account is decreased by $200 while receiver’s increases by that much. The bank has different accounting systems which help keep track of balances and if the sender’s account has enough funds; otherwise, the check bounces oronline transfer isn’t possible. If the sender has only $200 in their account and they write two $100 checks, then depending on the order of which they are cashed, one check will bounce.

The details of the transaction in the bank’s records can be queried and verified by both parties to the transaction. Additionally, only designated bank officials and concerned authorities such as the tax department or government have access to those details.

Although public ledgers and bank records may seem similar, there are a few key differences between the two.

Cryptocurrency public ledgers work similarly to bank records in that the transaction details can be verified and queried by the two transacting participants. However, unlike with banks, no central authority or network participant can know the identity of the participants. Transactions are only allowed and recorded after verification of the sender’s liquidity; otherwise, they are discarded.

Since no central authority maintains or regulates the ledger records, how are fairness issues handled on cryptocurrency ledgers?

A public ledger can be imagined as a physical data management or storage system that is comparable to a database system which bank records are kept in. A blockchain is a type of public ledger, where transaction details are recorded after going through the authentication and verification process by people who have been designated by the network.

Stablecoins are cryptocurrencies whose value is stabilized, or linked, to that of another currency, commodity, or financial instrument. Stablecoins are meant to provide an alternative to the high volatility of most popular cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin (BTC), which has made such investments less practical for daily transactions.

Bitcoin is the most popular cryptocurrency, but it can be very volatile. For example, in March 2020 its price was barely above $4,000 and by April 2021 had risen to nearly $65,000 only to fall again by 50% over the next two months. Swings within a day can also be large; it often moves more than 10% in just a few hours.

For investors holding cryptocurrencies for extended periods of time, the continuous volatility makes routine purchases a risky speculation. They don’t want to become renowned for exchanging 10,000 Bitcoins for two pizzas. Most sellers also don’t want to face a loss if the cryptocurrency’s value decreases abruptly after they’ve been paid in it.

As a currency that isn’t lawful tender, a cryptocurrency must maintain a stable value in order to reassure those who accept it that it will retain purchasing power. Daily forex trading movements of 1% are uncommon among traditional fiat currencies.

Stablecoins, as the name suggests, attempt to address this issue by promising to keep the value of cryptocurrency consistent.

Some might claim that stablecoins are a cure in search of a disease because the US dollar is so readily available and accepted. nMany cryptocurrency enthusiasts, on the other hand, believe that digital currency controlled by central banks will be the future. Stablecoins are divided into three categories based on the method used to keep their value stable.

Fiat-collateralized stablecoins are backed by assets such as the U.S. dollar, gold, or silver to maintain its value and avoid volatility.

Common stablecoins like Tether (USDT) and TrueUSD (TUSD) are denominated at parity to the U.S. dollar, meaning their value is always equal to $1 USD. These currencies are backed by currency reserves that are regularly audited by independent custodians.

Crypto-collateralized stablecoins are backed by other cryptocurrencies. Because the reserve cryptocurrency may also be volatile, such stablecoins are over-collateralized—the value of cryptocurrency held in reserves exceeds the value of the stablecoins issued.

If the value of a cryptocurrency falls by 50%, there is still $2 million worth of that currency held in reserve to support $1 million in stablecoins. For example, MakerDAO’s Dai (DAI) is exchangeable for U.S. dollars but also backed 150% by Ethereum (ETH) and other cryptocurrencies.

Stablecoins that use an algorithmic approach to keep the value stable may or may not maintain reserves. Their main distinction is the method used to keep the value of a stablecoin steady by restricting supply via a computer program, which is essentially a set of instructions.

Unlike central banks, which use a reserve asset to keep the value of their issued currency stable, we don’t rely on that. The difference is that acentral bank like the Federal Reserve sets monetary policy publicly and its credible status as the issuer of legal tender does wonders for our policy’s reputation.

Algorithmic stablecoins have no advantage in a crisis. For example, on May 11, 2022, the price of TerraUSD (UST) crashed more than 60%. This caused it to lose its peg to the U.S dollar as the price of Luna- the token used to peg Terra- slumped by more than 80%.

Stablecoins have come under increasing regulatory scrutiny, given the rapid expansion of the $130 billion market and the potential it has to influence the global financial system.

In October 2021, the International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO) urged regulators to treat stablecoins as financial market infrastructure alongside payment systems and clearinghouses. The plan focuses on stablecoins that have been recognized by authorities as being systemically significant, with the potential to disrupt payments and settlements.

Moreover, politicians have been increasingly vocal about the need for tighter regulation of stablecoins. For instance, in September 2021, Senator Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyoming) called for regular audits ofstablecoin issuers, while others support bank-like regulations for the sector.
